As part of our series spotlighting members of memoQ's Americas Hub, we had the pleasure of speaking with Luz. She shared insights into her journey to memoQ, her enthusiasm for translation technology, her personal interests, and more.
Hi Luz, please introduce yourself in a few words!
My name is Luz Elena Videgaray Aguilar (yep, all that). I studied Translation and Applied Linguistics, and I speak Spanish, English, French, and a rusty Portuguese that is starting to come back. I have two boys, and a 50-kilo Carpathian shepherd named Furris, which means “of poor quality” in Spanish.
When and why did you join memoQ?
I joined memoQ back in 2022. I was working with a very large LSP. Although I was doing well, my day-to-day tasks stopped making sense to me. For example, I frequently had to solve linguistic challenges coming from LQAs (huge excel files), in languages I didn’t speak. One day memoQ knocked on my door. Since 2009, I had dreamed of this company when I was lucky enough to start using our beloved tool as a translator. I’ve been in our industry for over 20 years now (yep, I’m not getting any younger), and as a translator I had never had actual fun using a tool before memoQ. Additionally, in my day job, I was looking for a feeling of belonging. memoQ was a dream come true. Three years later, I’m still very much living the dream.
What does your current position entail?
As a Technical Solution Specialist (a.k.a. Solution Engineer), I own our hub’s technical pre-sales process. I’m in charge of demos, trial kick-offs, and Q&As. To diversify my tasks and to forget about the stress of demos, I sometimes train a team or two.
What do you enjoy most about your position?I enjoy presenting memoQ, and even the exciting stress that comes with it. I like being the first contact our prospects have with memoQ.
What do you like most about the translation industry?
How diverse it is. Most of the time, we get to know well-educated people who speak several languages, have travelled the world, and who come from a myriad of backgrounds and cultures. In some way, we are the Rainbow Nation.
How would you describe the memoQ team?
A team united by the love and respect for our tool. For memoQers, this is not just a job, this is the job. And our passion will motivate us to walk the extra mile to find solutions for our clients.
What are your hobbies?Hard question. There are so many! I have always loved dancing (Latin American music)! When I first came to France, I was a young mother and wanted to pass on my language and culture to my babies. So, I started cooking more than I did in Mexico (so my boys would get used to our flavors). I also started crafting my own piñatas. I’ve discovered several things about my country now that I’m far from it. I now cook for 40-50 people sometimes. I’m especially proud to say that my sons Víctor and Tino are fully bilingual, and they had a piñata every birthday, just like any other Mexican kid.
