iOS localization with memoQ

​Localizing iOS files can be a challenging task for any translator. Gábor Ugray, memoQ Translation Technologies founder and one of the masterminds behind memoQ, shares his experience with us on translating an iOS package from Inkpad, an application for creating visual arts on iPad.
Here we sum up the main steps of Gábor’s localization process:
 

• Receiving iOS package from his client/partner.
• Creating a regex filter to import the strings into memoQ. Here Gábor capitalized on Marek Pawalec’s previous experience, who 3 years earlier described the regex needed to make an iOS localization file import into memoQ.
• Using memoQ regex tagger to work out placeholders from the source text.
• Creating a pseudo-translated deliverable to test the files with the client/partner. Gábor here used previous experience from Michał Tosza on pseudo-translation in game localization.
• Building up terminology. Gábor’s project was on vector graphics. He was familiar with vector terminology in English but not in his native language – Hungarian. He decided to consult Adobe’s documentation in English and Hungarian.
• Converting the .pdf manuals from Adobe to XLIFF with TransPDF.
• Aligning Adobe’s documentation with memoQ.
• Translating Inkpad’s user interface from English to Hungarian.
