The “Ask the Geeks” panel was one of my favourite sessions at last year’s memoQfest. Four of the main architects and developers at Kilgray were answering questions and leading a discussion on Kilgray’s technology.

At the time of the 2010 conference Kilgray were working on qTerm and there was a very interesting discussion on terminology management and the tools used for this. There was a consensus among the audience that Trados MultiTerm from SDL has been the standard for terminology management tools for some time. While many were negative about this tool, there were some very knowledgeable and experienced people who had positive things to say about it. SDL and Michael Wetzel, the product manager for Multiterm, should be congratulated on their work on this product

After memoQfest our geeks went back to what they do best, developing. We were very proud to release version 1 of qTerm by November and very pleased that a number of customers quickly started using qTerm. The thinking behind qTerm is very simple. It is that careful and efficient management of terminology can save money for translation companies, for end customers and for translators. There is an investment to be made. The biggest part of this investment is not in paying for software but in looking at your process and improving it by improving how you manage terminology.

We at Kilgray believe we have an excellent tool with qTerm and we would like to work hard until it is not just the technology leader for terminology management but we can see more and more of our customers improving their bottom line by using qTerm.

At this year’s memoQfest we are going to have two sessions in particular which will help our customers look at how they can use qTerm and terminology management to improve their business. Barbara Inge Karsch (http://bikterminology.com/ ) is giving the keynote presentation on April 14th. Much of her experience is with larger companies such as Microsoft and JD Edwards but the insights she has gained there will benefit companies of any size. The other session is on the pre-conference day and it is the qTerm master class. The entire morning will be focussed on this tool and how to use it most effectively. We will also be having another “Ask the Geeks” panel and maybe the audience will again inspire our developers with new suggestions ideas to further memoQ, TM-Repository and qTerm.
